At a Carter Weekend one of the guests asked Mrs. Carter what she was working on. She talked about mental health and then about how we need to protect Monarch butterflies and plant milkweed for them to eat. She was going on a lot about it and as President Carter gently took her arm to pull her away from the mic, she strained her neck towards the mic and said, “Don't forget to plant the milkweed!”

When we visited The Carter Library and the Carter Center, we were moved by the many social programs the first Lady and the President started or were involved in. Much of what they did they did out of love, not recognition. We are saddened by the loss of such a beautiful soul.

Mrs. Carter, Thank you for showing my then-8-year-old daughter that you can be a woman of power and grace while still being humble, accessible, and compassionate. You were a hospitality volunteer at Maranatha and we were guests for a baptism. You were trying to serve my daughter chocolate-covered strawberries and she was in awe that you, a former First Lady of the United States were serving her.

I am so grateful of the memories I have of the Carters and everything they've done with Habitat for Humanity. Oddly enough, these folks have been mentors for my life and they don't even know it. I met Jimmy Carter on a job site in the Philippines, 20 years ago, and he told me how to nail something on a wall more carefully. Since then I have been so honored to have been a participant in Habitat for Humanity in various capacities. Rosalynn Carter will live in my memory forever as her dear husband will. I am so thankful for these folks.
