I am and always was impressed with President Jimmy Carter giving to others when he was up and when he was not at his best. He is one of the reasons that I am or will work with Habitat for Humanity. May God continue to watch over and give Grace to the Carter Family.

Memories of Carter's presence as President of the US brought sighs of “if only” because he was a truth-teller. He wore sweaters in the White House and put solar cells on its roof. He was a nuclear engineer and understood the threat of nuclear warfare. He used his personal kindness as a grandfather to bring two statesmen together who eventually signed a peace treaty. Before Egypt and Israel agreed to peace between their countries, we could not fly directly from Egypt to Israel. We had to travel to Jordan to get to Israel. Oh, how I wish his moral judgement was evidenced today. Yes, he was a gifted, compassionate, persistent man who raised the vocation of farming to a higher plain as well as making service to humanity a way to give attention to loving all our neighbors.

I had the immense pleasure of meeting with President Carter when I was attending school in New Hampshire. We were a small school that was probably half an hour away from Dartmouth College and this presidential candidate took the time to stop and speak with us at this tiny school. No hiding who he was. An honest, decent man who cared about all people.

I first heard the name Jimmy Carter when I was eighteen years old living at home before I went off to college, and when November rolled around I enthusiastically voted for the man who would become the 39th President. I did not get to meet President Carter until 2017, as a volunteer in Edmonton Canada where I had the distinct honor of working alongside him during the Carter Work Project.

My ex-wife took our two kids (12&7) to a book signing for Always a Reckoning. Each one got a book and he signed them and talked to my children. They still have those books. A few years ago, we went to his center in Plains on Presidents day. He was just leaving when we got there. His story is amazing. I will never forget how the attendants openly adored and genuinely adored him.

My first Habitat International Board meeting was in January in Americus. President Carter was there...not as a board member but just to greet us and invite us to attend his Sunday school class at his Baptist church in Plains. Who would turn down that invitation?! Many of us went the next day and I was fortunate enough to sit next to Mrs. Carter....with a huge Secret Service gentleman between us. During the class, President Carter asked a Biblical question and I thought I should offer the Presbyterian point of view! He thanked me but informed me my answer was only partially correct! Ah well. Shortly thereafter I leaned over the SS bulk and asked Mrs. Carter where the ladies restroom was. She gave me quick but friendly instructions and I left the class. Followed her directions down the hall, past the shuttered kitchen to where I needed to be. Upon my return as I passed the kitchen area I noticed a chart on the wall and being curious in nature, stopped to look at it. It was a church KP chart for the upcoming week. And there in the middle of the duties was the word Vacuuming and next to that Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter! The former President of the United States assigned to vacuuming!!? As I returned to my seat I knew in my head that the Carters would be at the church to complete their assignment! And in my heart, I cemented the lesson he had just taught me...no matter who you are and what “big” things you have done or are doing, it's the small, everyday things you do for others that count. President Carter and I had opportunities to work together but this incident was so important: and no, I don't remember the Biblical verse under discussion!! But I do remember to do a complete a random act of kindness for or to someone every day.

In summer of 2004 I took my high school/college age choir to Americus, Georgia, to work on a Habitat for Humanity build. We helped with construction of a community center there. And WOW was it hot!! We also did numerous concerts in the area. On Sunday we did a concert at President Carter's church and had the privilege of meeting him and Millard Fuller. What a once-in-a-lifetime occasion for all of us! We felt so honored that both of these great men would be present for us.
