As a teenager in the late 1970s, I was in the crowd when he gave a speech in Exeter NH, from the bandstand. I don't recall if he was still a candidate or president yet, but it was inspiring to see a national figure in person for the first time. I've never forgotten it.
Later in 1991 Pasadena CA, inspired by President Carter, I volunteered on the first Habitat project in LA County. Today it is well kept and the mortgage paid off in 2012 by the single mother of two! What a wonderful legacy of peace, kindness and giving he gave us all.

I didn't know much about President and Mrs. Carter previous to volunteering with Habitat, though I'm very glad to have come to understand and want to learn more about them. I hope that we can learn from how they lived their lives and use them as examples in stewarding our own lives, sharing those virtues in hopes that others will learn from the past, respect the present, and plan for the future.

What a loss! I think he was too good to be a president (by today's standards). If more people were like him and Rosalynn, the world would be a MUCH kinder and nicer world. The work they did, with much love, will forever be a legacy where they are concerned. They were what HOPE is for many people who just needed help. And they did that with love. Jimmy Carter was always my favorite president but more importantly a friend.

I was newly married and in college when I read about Habitat for Humanity. It featured President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn Carter in the article. I was a new Christian and so inspired by his love of God, country, and his fellow man. I remember thinking that one day my husband and I would also volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. I joined Habitat in the Solano and Napa Counties of California and I am still inspired by President and Mrs. Carter's example, except now I am actually participating in something that is truly rewarding and benefiting to others. Thank you President and Mrs. Carter. If you were on trial for your Christian beliefs, sir there would be enough evidence to convict you. Well done good and faithful servant.

I lost my mom to Melanoma, and I was diagnosed with the disease 12 years ago. It's a terrifying disease - one with a pretty ugly outcome in most cases. I will never forget when President Carter was diagnosed. Watching him fight and win against it has given me hope. He was an incredible man and heaven just gained an amazing angel.
