Laying on a bed of flowers is a light blue hardhat with the Habitat logo and a message written on the side that reads "Thank you for a lifetime of service and inspiration. We are forever grateful" signed by Habitat CEO Jonathan Reckford.

Sign our memory book: honor President Carter

We invite you to join us in remembering President Carter’s remarkable legacy. Share how President Carter has impacted you in our memory book, below.

We are honored to be just one part of the incredible differences President Carter made in the world. For more than three decades, the Carters shared their unwavering passion for helping others with Habitat for Humanity, leading the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project and tirelessly dedicating their hands and their voices toward a vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Because of their devotion, President and Mrs. Carter were named as our inaugural Habitat Humanitarians, the highest honor given to champions of our mission.

I have always had the utmost respect for President Carter. In 1990 I volunteered for Habitat for Humanity in Matamoros, Mexico, while I was pregnant with my son. It was an incredible honor to meet President Carter and be in a group photo with him. All presidents should do good works post-presidency like he did!

I had the privilege of getting to know Pres. Carter over a span of several years. From our first chance meeting on a plane flying into Atlanta in 1990 to our quarterly board meetings at the Carter Center in more recent years; every encounter with him further impressed his heartwarming qualities of humility, approachability and sense of humor deep within my heart. The world has lost a great soul.

“President Carter was a treasured friend and inspiring role model who showed the world how to put faith into action. It was one of the great privileges of my life to spend time serving with him. He was a true and tireless champion of affordable housing, social justice and human rights, and while our hearts are heavy, we are grateful for the lasting impact and legacy of service he leaves behind.”

Watching the funeral service brought back memories of living in America when Jimmy made his first run for President. His work alongside his wife made a huge difference in America. That was true for Habitat for Humanity in particular.

My family has always loved this cause. My father, who became a builder, saw his own Appalachian family in the people you served so humbly throughout your life. Thank you for your service, Mr President. May the efforts of you and Rosalynn continue to bear good fruits, in perpetuity.

Though I never got to meet President Carter personally, he has been one of my heroes for more than 50 years. His life was the finest example of Christian servant leadership and an inspiration for present and future generations. His example is one of the many reasons I am proud to lead a Habitat affiliate. Rest in Peace, Mr. President and thank you for your service.

Former President Carter is gone but as Jason his grandson said, “he’s gone but not gone far.” Jimmy snail mailed my father back a signed good luck letter of support fighting cancer with the same medicine he used.

President Carter was a great man and will be missed. When I was introduced to Habitat for Humanity, I found President Carter's involvement and support for Habitat for Humanity. As I participated in a few team builds and housewarmings, I appreciated President Carter's humanitarian work and vision more than anything else.

When I was a child growing up in my native country of Panama the then President Carter signed the Torrijos-Carter treaty ending deaths of Panamanians who all they asked for is sovereignty in our canal as well as respect to our people and country. Thanks President Carter for bringing peace to our country and transferring the canal to Panamanians. We, the Panamanians, will always love you. Gracias.
