Building Solid Ground for Women: Land Rights as a Foundation for Sustainable Cities

We will discuss the barriers women face when it comes to land and property ownership during our panel discussion at the European Development Days in Brussels on June 6, 2018.

Empowering Women

Making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable by 2030 is one of the Sustainable Development Goals. However, what we see today is the continued growth of inequality and “urbanization of poverty”. To change this situation, we need to look for solutions at the local, regional and global levels.

Currently, 75 percent of land worldwide is not legally documented. The process of establishing a claim to land is complicated by lengthy delays or high fees. The situation for women is even worse. We need to understand which obstacles women face when they try to obtain and own land and property, so that we can empower them to break the cycle of poverty. 

More attention and resources focusing on women in urban areas across the Global South are needed.
