Read some of the most frequently asked questions about how to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.
How does the Global Village program work?
A volunteer team leader, who plays a pivotal role in making the trip a success, leads each Global Village team. Prior to the trip the team leader will undertake training on all aspects of the trip. Planning and preparation is coordinated through the Habitat organization that sends you, while volunteer coordinators and professionals in the Habitat organization that hosts you will manage the in-country experience.
What kind of construction work would I do?
Construction work varies depending on the trip location, the local construction techniques and the stage the building program has reached at the time of your trip. You could be, for example, digging foundations, mixing concrete or mortar, laying blocks, raising timber frame walls, making window frames, plastering, painting or landscaping.
What is the minimum and maximum team sizes for a Global Village team?
The minimum size varies on the country and the type of the project, but usually, teams range from 8 members to as much as 60 participants.
How old do I have to be to volunteer?
You need to be at least 18 years old.
I have special dietary requirements. Can I participate?
Yes. Prior to the build, each volunteer will fill out a detailed questionnaire on their dietary requirements, and all meals will be adjusted accordingly.
Can I join the trip in any health condition?
Volunteer trips can be physically demanding. A physical disability or a medical condition, however, should not prevent you from taking part. If there is likely to be a problem, we will let you know and suggest an alternative. But we strongly recommend that you discuss any health or medical conditions with your trip organizer in advance of your trip.
What about safety on the build site?
Your safety is of paramount importance for us, and we always try to minimize risk. In case of an accident, there will be access to qualified medical consultation and services regardless of your team’s location. All projects have first aid trained staff available. Volunteers are insured and 24/7 assistance is provided.
