Helping our neighbors

The end of August 2005 was my first week on the job as Habitat’s CEO. Never had the United States experienced such a widespread and devastating natural disaster as the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina. And with Hurricane Rita following in a matter of mere weeks, only rarely had Habitat for Humanity been called upon to mount such an extraordinary response.

Beginning with our first visits to the affected areas, we were amazed at the strength and determination of those who were affected by the storms and the generosity of those who wanted to help. We talked to numerous families who had lost everything but were resolute in their commitment to start over and come back stronger. And we were blessed by volunteers and supporters from around the world who offered their support to help those families and communities rebuild.

This fall, we mark 10 years of hard work and rebuilding along the U.S. Gulf Coast, and we celebrate the resilience of our partner families — families like the Davisons. Through God’s amazing grace, the Davisons’ home is one of thousands that have been built, renovated or repaired in the region since Katrina and Rita.

Through your steadfast support, in those same 10 years, our tremendous growth has allowed us to partner with more and more families worldwide.
