Brian Lafferty hammers on a Habitat build site.

Habitat AmeriCorps profile: Brian Lafferty

Upon graduating from St. Joseph’s University, Brian Lafferty had his eye on Habitat for Humanity. Habitat AmeriCorps offered him the perfect opportunity.

“When I was looking for what was next after graduation, I started looking around if there was anything at Habitat, just because I had such an amazing experience through Collegiate Challenge,” he says. “Luckily, there was a position I was very interested in, working as the volunteer coordinator at Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia.”

Brian liked the idea of bringing his perspective as a volunteer to the position. “I felt like that would be a really special opportunity to be the one on the other side, bringing the volunteers in and hopefully helping them have the same experience I had,” he says.

“It really meant a lot just to be with like-minded AmeriCorps members. It had an affirming sense. Doing a year of service was the right thing to do, based on that experience.”

Brian also had the chance to travel to Habitat’s AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon in 2016. The event brings Habitat AmeriCorps members and alumni from across the country together to help meet the need for decent and affordable housing in local communities.

“It really meant a lot just to be with like-minded AmeriCorps members,” he says. “It had an affirming sense. Doing a year of service was the right thing to do, based on that experience.”

Brian plans to apply to the National Guard. Habitat AmeriCorps, he says, “has developed me professionally and given me the skills to get a job that suits me.”
