Habitat for Humanity International announces new collaboration with InSinkErator
ATLANTA (May 29, 2024) — Habitat for Humanity International today announced a new collaboration with InSinkErator, a global manufacturer of garbage disposals and instant hot water dispensers for home and commercial use. Over the next year, InSinkErator, a Whirlpool Corporation brand, will donate a Badger 1 Model Garbage Disposal for each new Habitat home construction or rehabilitation as well as critical home repair projects including complete kitchen replacements and renovations or kitchen sink replacements.
“We’re incredibly excited to work with Habitat for Humanity International and to make InSinkErator disposals standard in every Habitat home,” said Joe Dillon, president of InSinkErator. “We’re inspired by the impact Whirlpool Corporation has had in their 25-year relationship with Habitat and look forward to delivering sustainability benefits to Habitat homes and families.”
According to a 2023 report by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, food waste in landfills contributes to more methane emissions than any other landfilled materials. The report estimates that 58% of methane emissions from municipal solid waste landfills are from landfilled food waste. Since the Industrial Revolution, methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, has been responsible for nearly 30% of the rise in global temperatures. InSinkErator products help to reduce the amount of food waste taken to landfills and resulting methane emissions that contribute to global warming. Many wastewater treatment plants can also convert disposal waste into renewable energy and beneficial fertilizer.
“As climate change continues to impact our planet, Habitat for Humanity is always working to prioritize sustainable homebuilding,” said Charlita Stephens-Walker, vice president, corporate partnerships and cause marketing, Habitat for Humanity International. “We are continuously finding ways to build homes that optimize sustainability and incorporate features and appliances that not only support families, but the environment. Through this relationship, InSinkErator is actively supporting our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to call home.”
About Habitat for Humanity
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity found its earliest inspirations as a grassroots movement on an interracial community farm in south Georgia. Since its founding in 1976, the Christian housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
