Habitat Guatemala changes the reality
for 1 million people
Habitat for Humanity Guatemala launches the 1 Million Dreams Accomplished campaign in the country. With this campaign, the organization will celebrate the work done for 45 years in the country and reach the milestone of improving the housing conditions of one million people on the national territory.
The celebration will consist of a week of construction in which volunteers and families will build four complete homes and replace 15 dirt floors with concrete, thus contributing to improving the health and quality of life of 95 adults and children.

Through construction programs, rehabilitation and access to decent housing, we are changing lives and building a more hopeful future for thousands of Guatemalan families”, said Oscar Sequeira, president of Habitat for Humanity Guatemala.

At the same time, during this constructive week, Habitat seeks to raise awareness about the need to continue eradicating the housing deficit in the country as there is still much work to be done. According to studies by the National Association of Home Builders (ANACOVI), the housing deficit in Guatemala amounts to more than 2.2 million homes that have some deficiency in minimum conditions of habitability, according to the methodology of ECLAC.
Staff, members of the National Steering Committee and board members of Habitat Guatemala together with partners and Luis Castillo, Vice Minister of Urban Development and Housing of Guatemala, celebrate the 45th anniversary of the organization in the country with the launch of the campaign 1 Million Dreams Accomplished.
Meanwhile, the XII National Population Census and VII Housing Census, conducted by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) in 2018, reveal that more than 843 thousand homes have dirt floors, demonstrating the urgency of addressing these deficiencies.
“In a nation where cultural richness and diversity are intertwined with history, it is imperative that every Guatemalan has access to decent housing. Together, we can transform Guatemala’s housing panorama and build a stronger, more prosperous future for all”, concludes Delorean Randich, national director of Habitat for Humanity Guatemala.
Since 1979, Habitat for Humanity Guatemala has built the homes of 57,000 families, improved more than 24,000 homes, and benefited more than 75,000 families through specific programs aimed at communities in conditions of extreme poverty.
