XV National Forum on Social Housing in Guatemala
Guatemala is currently facing an alarming housing deficit that affects thousands of families throughout the country. According to data compiled by government agencies and civil society organizations, it is estimated that at least 40% of the population does not have decent housing.
This housing deficit is not only a lack of a roof over their heads, but also includes problems related to quality, accessibility, overcrowding, lack of basic services such as drinking water and sanitation, and the precariousness of the habitability and safety conditions of existing housing. This is exacerbated by several factors, including rapid urbanization, population growth, lack of economic resources, and insufficient effective housing policies.
The consequences of this crisis are significant, affecting the health, education, safety and emotional stability of those who suffer from it. Given this reality, Habitat for Humanity Guatemala held the XV National Forum on Social Housing, generating a crucial space for dialogue, reflection, and collaboration among diverse actors such as government, NGOs, specialists in the construction sector, academics and civil society.
“This event is a significant step toward building a livable future for Guatemalan families in need. Together, we can make a lasting impact and transform the reality of thousands of people by providing decent and adequate housing. Investing in housing is investing in our people and in the sustainable development of our country,” said Oscar Sequeira, president of Habitat for Humanity Guatemala.

During the event, innovative strategies and solutions were discussed to address the housing deficit and move towards affordable and sustainable housing in the country. Crucial issues were also addressed, including financing strategies for affordable housing, sustainable technologies and materials, effective housing policies, and community participation in social housing projects.
“The XV National Forum on Social Housing was a key platform for collaboration and synergy between different stakeholders interested in addressing the housing deficit. With the event we seek to inspire more people to join us in our mission to provide sustainable housing and improve the quality of life of communities throughout the country,” said Delorean Randich, national director of Habitat for Humanity Guatemala.
