Participate in our visual arts contest for water

Habitat for Humanity International convenes visual artists from Latin America and the Caribbean to the Visual Arts Contest for the Regional Day of Action: Youth and Women’s Narratives for Action - For Water and Sanitation in Latin America and the Caribbean.

For this contest, people over 15 years are invited to present an artwork with the theme:  The lack of access to water and sanitation suffered by young people and women in Latin America and the Caribbean as a cause of inequality in urban and peri-urban areas.

Characteristics of the works

Priority will be given in the selection of artworks:

  • Unpublished artworks that have been made exclusively for this contest.
  • Integration of contemporary perspectives or languages.
  • Development of proposals for linking with audiences, mediation and / or formation of audiences.

Artworks will be accepted in any of the manifestations of the visual arts (analog or digital) such as printing (screen printing), printing, engraving, photography, drawing, painting, textiles, handmade paper, works in low relief, artistic collage, ensembles, mixed media, videos, animations, etc.

Dimensions

The artworks may have free format, only the videos and animations will be presented according to the criteria indicated below.

Number of works

Each participant must submit a single artwork.

Participant Information

Each artwork must have the following information:

  • Name of the participant (physical or legal).
  • Age of the participant.
  • Title of the artwork.
  • Participant’s email.
  • Participant’s phone number.
  • Maximum text of 500 words with the justification of the proposed artwork.
  • Date of creation and place where the artwork was carried out.

Reception of the artworks

Digitally in an image format .jpg of high quality (no more than 25 Mb), in the case of videos and animations with a maximum of 4 minutes and no more than 1 GB.

All participating artworks will be sent by email to the address [email protected]

The period of reception of the works end on the 10th September 2022 at 11:59 pm CR time

Artworks will not be accepted after the established period.

Recognition

This contest has the following prizes in cash: US$200, US$150 for second place and US$50 for third place, and also includes the dissemination of the selected works in the digital spaces of the organization and its co-organizers.

Jury

 The qualifying jury will be integrated as follows:

 a) Two people representing Habitat and Humanity International from the LAC area office, which coordinates the event.

 b) A person representing SDI.

 c) A person from the collaborating organizations of the event

d) A Latin American artist who has been awarded a recognized award in the field.

The jury may declare the contest void, either totally or partially, if it considers that the artworks presented do not meet the requirements. The ruling shall be final. The jury will meet to make the selection of works. Participants will be informed of the selected artworks.

Exhibition

With the selected artworks, a video will be made, in the form of a “Virtual Room”, which will be exhibited during the conversation “Regional Day of Action: Narratives of Youth and Women for Action - For Water and Sanitation in Latin America and the Caribbean”;  to be held on 21 June as part of the new Urban Thinkers Campus: “Universal access to water and sanitation to overcome urban inequality”, as part of the UN-Habitat Global Urban Campaign.

All the artworks participating in this contest will be donated to Hábitat para la Humanidad Internacional and will be used non-profit to make visible the problem identified, always indicating the full name of the artists who created them.

About the theme

Driven by the vision that every person deserves a dignified place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots movement on a community farm in Southern Georgia, United States. The Christian housing organization has since grown to become a nonprofit world leader working in local communities in all 50 states in the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. The owners of a Habitat home are not only spectators but participate in the solution of their home. Many work with volunteers, employ custom credit, or use other methods. Families and people in need of a hand partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Through financial support, volunteerism, or the addition of a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability, and self-sufficiency they need to build a better life for themselves. Through housing, we empower people.

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) is a pillar of our work. Because of this, in October 2021, after a coordinated work with the national organizations from Paraguay and Bolivia, we participated with a proposal to be partners of the Global Urban Campaign (GUC), of the UN-Habitat, and we were selected.

Thanks to this proposal, Habitat now shelters the Campus of Urban Thinkers: Universal Access to Water and Sanitation to Overcome Urban Inequality – Promoting Collaboration and Innovation in Latin America and the Caribbean.  The project consists in four events related to the theme. The discussion “Regional Day of Action: Youth and Women’s Narratives for Action - For Water and Sanitation in Latin America and the Caribbean” is the latest of these.

Lack of access to water and sanitation has been identified as another cause of inequality for youth and women. This will be the problem addressed during this workshop with the help of the visual arts as an attractive promotional tool for young people.

In this context, we open this call to participate in this contest. We are looking for visual artists from the region who want to capture the existing inequities due to the lack of access to WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene) and exhibit their work to raise awareness among the public participating in the taller.
