Habitat for Humanity responding to Super Typhoon Haima

Manila, 21 October 2016 – As Super Typhoon Haima (known locally as Lawin) left a trail of shattered lives and destroyed homes in its wake, Habitat for Humanity announces that it is joining the emergency effort to assist survivors and communities affected by this major disaster.

“Habitat for Humanity has assessment teams ready to deploy here in the Philippines, and we are well prepared to respond to this emergency. Many of the roads in the hardest hit provinces have been blocked, and there has been heavy damage to homes. We are in contact with the local authorities, as we are planning our response for this powerful typhoon. The more funds we raise, the more families we can help,” said Rick Hathaway, Asia-Pacific vice-president for Habitat for Humanity.

Recognized as a leader in housing and shelter, Habitat for Humanity is seeking funding to implement an emergency program to repair damaged homes in affected communities.

Habitat for Humanity will coordinate with government agencies and partners in the Philippines for this disaster response operation.

Habitat has worldwide experience responding to disasters, following the earthquakes in Nepal last year, the Uttarahkhand India floods and Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in the Philippines in 2013 and the Haiti earthquake in 2010.
