Habitat for Humanity to assist families affected by Typhoon Koppu

Manila, 21 October 2015 – With massive damage to homes reported in central Luzon in the Philippines, global non-profit housing organization Habitat for Humanity has joined the effort to assist families affected by Typhoon Koppu, known locally as Typhoon Lando.

“We are sending an assessment team to some of the worst affected areas. They will be checking on shelter conditions, as we learn how many families have had their homes damaged or destroyed,” said Leonilo Escalada, Chief Operating Officer for Disaster Response with Habitat for Humanity Philippines.

“Information is still filtering in from outlying communities. We know that there will be a need to support affected families to repair and rebuild their homes. We are seeking funding to support this growing disaster response operation. The more funds we raise, the more families can be helped,” said Escalada.

Habitat for Humanity’s initial response plan is to help repair 100 houses, and is looking for funding to carry out a total of 1,000 house repairs, in support of families as they begin to rebuild their homes and lives.

Habitat for Humanity will coordinate with government agencies and partners for this disaster response operation.

Habitat for Humanity has worldwide experience responding to disasters, including following the earthquake in Nepal earlier this year, and following Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines in 2013.
