Joint contest by Siam Cement and Habitat for Humanity calls for university students to design homes that can withstand disasters

Some of the contestants for the Thai competition present their designs in Bangkok.

HO CHI MINH CITY/BANGKOK, 29 November 2012: University students in Vietnam and Thailand are challenged to create innovative housing designs that are also disaster-resilient in competitions jointly organized by Siam Cement Group and Habitat for Humanity.

Under the theme “Sustainable shelter in an age of climate change and disasters”, the competition was launched in late November in Vietnam while a similar contest began earlier in Thailand.

The Vietnam competition aims to raise public awareness of the impact of climate change in the country, particularly among young people and students. It also encourages creativity in the use of locally sourced and affordable materials in building homes that can withstand severe storms and flooding in the Mekong Delta region.

Students from six local universities are eligible to enter the competition. The institutions are: Van Lang University; Ton Duc Thang University; Ho Chi Minh University of Technology; Ho Chi Minh University of Technology and Education; Ho Chi Minh University of Architecture and Can Tho University.

In Thailand, university students have come up with new and improved house designs for areas prone to extreme weather conditions such as massive flooding. HFH Thailand will adopt the top three winning designs to build prototype houses in flood-prone Ayutthaya province.
