SINGAPORE, 29 November 2012: Many hands made light work, as Habitat for Humanity Singapore staff discovered when they helped a family in the neighboring Malaysian state of Johor.

After two days’ work, complete with matted hair and paint-crusted feet, staff were ready to present a newly painted house to the Yong family of four.

Without a source of income, the elderly parents were not able to make home improvements. Their adult daughter also suffers from spasm.

The family received new furniture from Wan Min Community Service, a Malaysian non-governmental organization which partnered with HFH Singapore in the project.

Habitat for Humanity was registered in Singapore a decade ago. Habitat neither builds or repairs houses in Singapore but is engaged in fund raising, volunteer mobilization and advocacy.

In 2006, HFH Singapore started “Operation Homeworks”, partly as a way to provide local volunteers with a way of making a hands-on Habitat contribution without going overseas. More than 3,000 volunteers have helped over 500 households through Operation Homeworks.
