Focus On Habitat’s Work In Providing Adequate Access To Safe Water And Safe Toilets

BANGKOK, 10 April 2012: This year’s theme for the United Nations’ World Water Day, observed on 22 March, was apt for Habitat for Humanity in the Asia-Pacific region.

Focusing on water and food security, the event called for reducing water wastage amid a growing world population and depleting resources.

In Cambodia, Habitat has assisted families such as Chen Pohn’s to increase his harvest of vegetables through the construction of water tanks.

For Sart Dyna, having a proper toilet not only reduced the health risks and embarrassment, but also encouraged her family to practise better personal hygiene by boiling water from the communal well and washing their hands regularly.

Over in Fiji, Habitat has completed 13 projects to provide adequate access to clean water since 2010. Funding support has come from the Japanese and American embassies, the New Zealand and Australian high commissions and the University of the South Pacific.
