MANILA/MUMBAI/HONG KONG, 10 April 2012: Creativity rules in fund raising for Habitat for Humanity in the Asia-Pacific region. From marathons in the Philippines and India to charity concerts in Hong Kong, China, Habitat supporters show firm support.
Annual charity runs as well as inaugural races have helped Habitat for Humanity Philippines run up donations. Globe Telecom’s annual Run4Home held on the central island of Cebu on 25 March raised 67,000 pesos (US1,600) from runners’ registration fees.
Another event, the FIC Run by Fox International Channels, had groups of runners racing in the 10 km. National Geographic Run for a Cause category in aid of Habitat.
Fox International Channels also provided 50 race kits to Habitat supporters for the run. About 10,000 pesos was donated to HFH Philippines. View photos and other news on HFH Philippines’ Facebook page.
In India, hundreds of runners took part in the Spree Goa Half Marathon on 11 March to highlight the need for decent housing. Over 700 students, corporate executives and defence personnel ran either 5 km. or 21 km. to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity India to build homes in Goa and Konkan.
The marathon was organized by a local university, the BITS Pilani KK Birla Goa Campus; local children’s charitable organization El Shaddai; and HFH India.
Habitat Youth BUILD ambassador, Bollywood actress Aditi Rao Hydari, said at the start of the race: “A lot of people in this country and across the world really suffer because they do not have a roof over their head. As the youth of this country we can make a huge difference because we can take things forward,” said the actress. “Let’s support Habitat for homes and empower people to have dignity and self-respect.” Visit HFH India’s Facebook page for more photographs and information.
Over in Hong Kong, HFH China raised nearly US24,500 from the Build for Hope charity concert held jointly with a Ugandan children’s choir in late February. Tickets were sold at HK330 and HK200 (US43 and US26) and proceeds were to go toward HFH China’s projects as well as Uganda’s Watoto Child Care Ministries and their housing projects.
Performers at the concert included jazz-and-gospel duo The Chung Brothers as well as singer and Habitat Build Ambassador Danny Choi. Other Ambassadors, model Jocelyn Luko and her husband Anthony Sandstrom, shared their experiences working with HFH China in its housing restoration project in Tai O village, Hong Kong.
