Some Of The U.S. Volunteers Returned To The Country For The First Time After 40 Years

Several members of the U.S. team who built with HFH Fiji were former Peace Corps volunteers who first arrived in the country 40 years ago.

SUVA, 7th August 2011: For many of the 30 U.S. volunteers who worked with Habitat for Humanity Fiji, the July build was the first time they revisited the Pacific Island country since they arrived 40 years ago as Peace Corps volunteers.

The Habitat build also marked the 50th anniversary of Peace Corps and 20th anniversary of Friends of Fiji.

The volunteers rehabilitated two houses in Rewa province near the capital Suva.

Pat Milliren, who volunteered with the Peace Corps from 1969 to 1970, said: “The Habitat build has given us an opportunity to come back to Fiji, when we might not have been able to come otherwise.”

The Peace Corps is a US volunteer program that has been sending Americans overseas to serve in areas like health, education, business development and the environment since 1961.

Friends of Fiji is a non-profit organization which aims to maintain contact among Peace Corps volunteers who returned from Fiji.
