TOKYO, 8th February 2011: Habitat for Humanity Japan’s campus chapters across the country are looking to continue to inspire support for Habitat’s reconstruction in earthquake-hit Haiti.

The students hope to build upon the success of a large-scale donation drive last December.

About 300 university students from 13 campus chapters took to the streets in 14 Japanese cities to appeal for funds to help Habitat rebuild homes in Haiti.

They raised one million yen (US12,000) over the two days.

Students stood in the wintry cold to greet passer-bys with a bow and talk to them about Habitat’s effort to help Haitians.

Yuta Taka, from Kwansei Gakuin University Uegahara Habitat campus chapter in Kobe said: “A year has passed since the earthquake and the people have started to forget that it happened. We organized this drive hoping to bring back the public interest in the matter.

“When I was on the streets, I actually felt that many people were reminded of the tragedy that happened to the people in Haiti.”

Taka studies in Kobe city in Hyogo prefecture, southern Japan, where survivors of the 1995 earthquake can still remember the devastation.

“Haiti may be on the other side of the world but there must be something we can do in Japan.”
