Yes, if you are a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. permanent resident who is studying abroad in another country and you have the availability to travel for the fellowship opportunity, you are still qualified to apply.

There would not be a conflict on the side of the fellowship opportunity as long as you feel you can still fulfill your requirements for the fellowship. However, you would need to verify with the organization that you are currently working under as to whether or not they would allow you to participate in a program such as this one.

No, you cannot make changes to an application that has already been submitted, but you may submit a new application with a note at the end in the free response section that some of your information has changed.

In January of 2023, Habitat-USAID/BHA was proud to receive the final presentations of our 2022 cohort for the Humanitarian Shelter and Settlements fellowship. In this recording from our S&S Fellowship Research Presentation, each of our fellowship members presented their research experiences in Peru, Indonesia, Lebanon and Washington, D.C. to a number of InterAction Network Shelter and Settlement experts who provided constructive feedback and dialogue.

HFHI-USAID/BHA Humanitarian Shelter & Settlements fellow Emily Nabong of the HS&S 2023 cohort interviews 2022 cohort fellow Melina Holder.
Emily Nabong, our facilitator, is one of three fellows from our current HS&S 2023 fellowship cohort. Emily is a PhD candidate in the Mobility Dynamics in Climate Change Affected Communities program at the University of Sydney. Her research is focused on modeling how climate change affects decision-making on migration patterns with research specific to Kiribati, which is currently affected by sea-level rise and is one of the first islands that may disappear in the coming years.
Melina Holder, HS&S 2022 cohort fellow, has a master’s degree in development practice from UC Berkeley and a bachelor’s degree in city and regional planning and sustainable environments from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Melina’s graduate school research focused on housing, land and property rights in humanitarian assistance. Melina assessed the Venezuelan refugee crisis in Latin America in partnership with the International Organization for Migration, or IOM. She traveled to Peru where many Venezuelans have settled or were in transit to other countries and assessed their tenure security needs and how humanitarian assistance can better respond to them.

HFHI-USAID/BHA Humanitarian Shelter & Settlements fellow Daud Shad of the HS&S 2023 cohort interviews 2022 cohort fellow Madeline Burnham.
Daud Shad, our facilitator and interviewer, is one of three fellows from our current HS&S 2023 fellowship cohort. He is pursuing a master’s in the city planning program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research is focused on shelter for internally displaced persons, or IDPs, in Karachi, Pakistan, in response to the 2022 floods.
Madeline Burnham, HS&S 2022 cohort fellow, has a master’s degree in disaster management from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. There, she focused on examining the relationship between shelter, disaster management and migration. Her research included interviews with displaced Syrian refugees in Lebanon and analyzing the role of humanitarian programs in long-term shelter recovery.

HFHI-USAID/BHA Humanitarian Shelter & Settlements fellow Andrea Batarse of the HS&S 2023 cohort interviews 2022 cohort fellow Ilham Siddiq.
Andrea Batarse, our facilitator for this webinar, is one of our three fellows currently operating under the HS&S 2023 fellowship cohort. She is an architectural designer from the Master’s of International Cooperation Sustainable Emergency Architecture program at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya. Andrea’s research is focused on the impact of humanitarian shelter and settlement migration in the area of the U.S.-Mexico border.
Ilham Siddiq, HS&S 2022 Cohort Fellow, is a PhD student in civil systems at the University of Colorado Boulder and holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His research focused on the long-term outcomes of post-disaster residential construction and livelihood programs in response to the 2004 earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia, of which he is a survivor. During those years he was a beneficiary of the housing programs implemented in response to the disaster. He has since conducted an analysis of all the different housing programs that were implemented after the tsunami.
