HUD awards $4.2 million capacity building grant to Habitat for Humanity
ATLANTA (Nov. 11, 2014) — Habitat for Humanity International has been awarded a 4.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to support affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization in more than 30 communities across the U.S.
“Habitat for Humanity and HUD have enjoyed a very fruitful partnership together that has benefited thousands of families across the U.S.,” said Jonathan Reckford, Habitat for Humanity International’s CEO. “Thanks to this grant, Habitat affiliates can create housing opportunities with even more families seeking a decent and safe place to live.”
Local Habitat for Humanity affiliates selected to receive a portion of the grant will use the new funding to help increase their capability to build affordable homes within their respective communities. Each affiliate is expected to increase their house production by at least 15 percent annually over three years. Additionally, Habitat affiliates must match their grant funds by raising 5 for every 1 of grant funds received. On average, Habitat affiliates see an increase in home production of approximately 35 percent through the use of these funds.
Since 1998, Habitat for Humanity has distributed more than 75 million in Section 4 HUD funding to local Habitat affiliates in 511 communities nationwide.
