Volunteer virtually by becoming Habitat for Humanity Champions
ATLANTA (Oct. 22, 2012) – In time for November’s 29th annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project in Léogâne, Haiti, Habitat for Humanity International has launched a special fundraising campaign called Habitat for Humanity Champions, which gives supporters the chance to become “virtual volunteers” by setting up personalized fundraising pages to help Habitat using their personal computers.
“Becoming a Habitat for Humanity Champion is one more way that people can support affordable housing efforts around the world,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “Volunteering online is a convenient and effective way to engage friends and family in helping to build homes, communities and hope.”
Personalized fundraising pages can be set up in honor of special events, such as birthdays, graduations or anniversaries, or in memory of a loved one. Habitat has set a goal to raise at least 29,000 through the efforts of Habitat for Humanity Champions.
The funds raised through the program will help Habitat’s work around the world, including in Haiti, site of the upcoming Carter Work Project. After the 2010 earthquake that struck Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, Habitat set a goal of serving 50,000 families over five years. Nearly three years into that five-year plan, Habitat’s construction and housing support services have benefited more than 40,000 families.
