Habitat for Humanity affiliates observe National Day of Service and Remembrance
ATLANTA (Sept. 11, 2012) —Habitat for Humanity affiliates are joining hundreds of organizations across the U.S. today to observe the Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance through volunteerism.
Habitat volunteers will pay tribute to 9/11 victims and heroes and honor their memory by participating in community-based service projects.
“We thank all the volunteers who will take action and support efforts to commemorate this national day of service,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “Our focus on building up communities and helping others is the best way we can observe and bring positive attention to this day of remembrance.”
In 2009, Congress designated Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) with supporting the initiative. Through the tireless efforts of the 9/11 families and the communities, nonprofits, governments and businesses that support them, the day reclaims the legacy of Sept. 11 and creates a permanent, positive tribute.
“In the aftermath of September 11, we came together as a country to show that we are there for each other,” said Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. “The September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance unites Americans and rekindles that same sense of compassion for the victims and heroes of that day. We are honored to work with partners at all levels of government, in the private sector, and in nonprofit and faith-based organizations to bring communities together in service.”
The Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance is being supported collaboratively this year by the Corporation for National and Community Service and the nonprofit MyGoodDeed, which annually organizes the 9/11 “I Will” campaign on behalf of the families of 9/11 victims.
