The housing need in Portugal
Habitat for Humanity Portugal is a Christian, non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating housing poverty. Since its founding in 1996, it has supported more than 80 families to have a decent home, helping roughly 400 individuals.
It is our belief and experience that a family that has the possibility of living in a dignified and safe home also has the basis for developing a healthy and constructive family life.
Habitat Portugal is a subsidiary of Habitat for Humanity International, an organization working in more than 70 countries that, since 1976, has helped over 9.8 million people worldwide to have safe, decent housing.
How Habitat addresses the need
Reconstruction of houses
Habitat Portugal’s main area of activity is the construction or reconstruction of houses with families in need of improved shelter.
In this way we manage to put Habitat’s vision into practice: “A world where everyone has a decent place to live.”
Habitat intervenes in the following situations:
- Root constructions.
- Reconstructions.
- Repairs.
- Rehabilitation.
- Conversion of equipment.
Awareness-raising of housing issues
The issue of housing poverty is far from resolved. Every day new cases of families appear that live in conditions that are far from worthy.
We believe that it is our role to help make society aware of this problem, not only through the dissemination of our work but also by calling attention to the existence of unacceptable situations in which families live without even the minimum of acceptable conditions.
Habitat Portugal is available to consider participating in any action that promotes this theme and to give its testimony
