Building Homes Together: The Habitat for Humanity Story
Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit, non-governmental organization specializing in building and improving affordable housing for low-income families. Our mission is founded on the belief that every person deserves a decent place to live.
Since our inception in 1976 as a Christian movement in the south of Georgia, USA, we have transformed the lives of more than 59 million people around the world by providing access to safe, decent housing.
Today, we are present in more than 70 countries, where low-income families join us to build or improve their homes. This process not only provides them with a roof over their heads, but also gives them the strength, stability and self-sufficiency they need to build a better future.
At Habitat, we believe that homeownership is a joint effort. Families are not mere spectators; they actively participate in the construction or improvement of their homes, side by side with volunteers from different parts of the world. They also take responsibility for low-cost credit and participate in workshops on safe construction, healthy housing, hygiene and more.
Every action we take is based on a powerful cause that inspires and motivates us at Habitat every day: Through shelter, we empower.
