Building resilient housing in Haiti

Habitat for Humanity Haiti builds earthquake-resistant housing through its design known as the Construction Locale Améliorée - Improved Local Construction Techniques (TECLA) model. These vernacular houses do not have a standard architectural design. They have a specific configuration for the geographic region and are adapted to the living conditions of the people of rural Haiti and their unique cultural heritage. They are built considering the environment, the available materials, and the climactic landscape, including wind and sun patterns, as well as the predominant or existing vegetation.

Following the earthquake of August 14, 2021, Habitat assessed the TECLA houses built by the organization in the earthquake-affected communities of Pestel, Corail, and Beaumont.

After the evaluation, it was verified that 100% of the houses were able to withstand the earthquake, achieving a record of zero deaths or injuries among the inhabitants of the houses.

Construyendo viviendas resilientes en Haití

Hábitat para la Humanidad Haití construye viviendas resistentes a los terremotos a través de su diseño conocido como TECLA (por sus siglas en inglés). Estas casas no tienen un diseño arquitectónico estándar. Tienen una configuración específica para la región geográfica y están adaptadas a las condiciones de vida de la población de las zonas rurales de Haití y a su patrimonio cultural único. Se construyen teniendo en cuenta el entorno, los materiales disponibles y el paisaje climático, incluidos los patrones de viento y sol, así como la vegetación predominante o existente.

Tras el terremoto del 14 de agosto de 2021, Hábitat evaluó las casas TECLA construidas por la organización en las comunidades Pestel, Corail y Beaumont, afectadas por el terremoto y tras la evaluación, se verificó que el 100% de las casas fueron capaces de resistir el terremoto, logrando un récord de cero muertes y heridos entre los habitantes de las casas.
