More than 1,000 entries received for Habitat for Humanity Build Challenge using LEGO blocks

Winning entries included those from Asher Jorgensen, aged 7 (above) and James Waddell, aged 13 (below).

AUCKLAND, 25 October 2012: Over 1,000 budding builders participated in Habitat for Humanity New Zealand’s first-ever Build Challenge. The judges were impressed by the quality and imagination of the Habitat “houses” built with LEGO.

They found the house descriptions “amusing and thought-provoking in equal measure” and were glad many children related their builds to the Habitat mission of providing safe, decent and affordable housing around the world.

More than 9,500 votes were received for the entries. The contestants could choose between building their house at home from their own LEGO blocks or at a special event.

One of the winners is Asher Jorgensen, 7, from Palmerston North. On his entry, he said: “This is a house for lots of family and friends to spend lots of time together. There are lots of different things to do, like using the punching bag, an area for break-dancing, there is also a band playing—a song called ‘party rockers’. There is a power box, with solar panels. There is an indoor & outdoor area to enjoy. I hope you like it!”
