Habitat for Humanity Launches Appeal to Help Typhoon Survivors in The Philippines

Funds Raised Will Provide Shelter Repair Kits, Tools and Cleaning Kits For Up To 25,000 Families

BANGKOK, August 13, 2012: Habitat for Humanity Philippines has launched an appeal for funds to assist those affected by floods and mudslides across Luzon, The Philippines’ largest island.

Annual southwestern monsoon rains, further exacerbated by tropical storm Haikui and Typhoon Saola, locally known as Typhoon Gener, have killed more than 90 people. Over three million have been affected, with more than 8,500 homes damaged and 400,000 people currently living in evacuation centers, according to latest Philippine government reports.

Habitat for Humanity is assessing the impact on housing in affected areas, and aims to distribute shelter repair materials, tools and cleaning kits to help 25,000 families in identified cities and municipalities in the country. Each shelter repair kit contains tools and materials that can be used to repair damage to homes and contains items like lumber, corrugated galvanized iron sheets, nails, hammers and hand saws. Cleaning kits contain items like mops, buckets, and industrial disinfectant.

“As the devastating effects of the heavy rains subside and the floods recede, many will return home to find their houses destroyed or damaged. As in previous disasters in the country, we are committed to supporting affected families rebuild their lives and gain access to decent shelter,” said Rick Hathaway, vice-president for Asia-Pacific, Habitat for Humanity International.
