Let’s Open the Door

Home is the foundation on which we build our lives.

But every day 1 in 3 people around the world wake up without the security of safe affordable housing.

We’re working to change that. We know every safe affordable home sparks wider change, leading to better health, education and well-being, more economic growth and less poverty.

That’s why Habitat has helped people around the world build, improve or finance places to call home for more than 50 years. Together with supporters like you, we’ve built a mission — and a movement.

Now, we’re building on that momentum. Through hands-on builds, pop-up exhibits, compelling new research and powerful storytelling, we’re bringing housing to the center stage at a global scale.

Because housing matters. With safe, stable housing, families have the freedom to focus on what matters most, empowering them to build their future on their own terms.

It all starts with an open door.

Opening doors to housing solutions

From financial stress to missed opportunities, housing pressure affects nearly every aspect of life. Home at What Cost?, Habitat’s new global housing report,  provides new evidence and insights to help inform housing solutions and open the door to better housing around the world.

Why does advocacy matter for housing?

What is sustainable building?

Through the door

Nine cities. Nine immersive installations. Countless stories. We transformed doors into works of art, spotlighting local creators and authentic homeowner experiences along the way. Relive the journey and discover the communities that opened the door to inspiration.

The impact of an open door

Behind every open door is a story. As we build on fifty years of work, we’re highlighting just a few of the people and innovations at the heart of our mission.

Habitat featured on The Kelly Clarkson Show

Habitat Chief Communications Officer Amy Dunham appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show on June 15, highlighting Let’s Open the Door and the impact of Habitat’s work around the world in the “What I’m Liking” segment.

Did you know?

Talk about hitting the ground running! In our very first year, we broke ground in San Antonio, Texas, and immediately took that mission global, partnering in the Democratic Republic of Congo (then Zaire) just months later.

We’ve helped more than 65 million people around the world access new or improved housing since 1976. Just in the last 15 years, we’ve grown our impact 100-fold.
