Simultaneously ancient and progressive, the design of the Habitat houses in the Newen Ruka community of Vina del Mar, Chile, follows traditional indigenous design.

The Architecture of Change
Habitat housing solutions are as diverse as the communities they call home

Photos by Steffan Hacker and Ezra Millstein

Habitat houses on the outskirts of Cochabamba, Bolivia, scale a steep and rocky hill. In the farming community of Varjada, Brazil, brick houses mean healthier families. A Habitat partnership with the Chilean government in the city of Temuco means more than 400 families have the hope of affordable housing. And in the Newen Ruka community of Vina del Mar, Chile, a Habitat house plan sheds new light on an indigenous building tradition.

All Habitat projects, all tailored to local landscapes and realities. The goal of affordable housing is the same, even as the forms the houses take are distinct and individual.
